Our mission is to improve education in Haiti starting with making the Heart Valley School the best school in Haiti

Goals:

1. Ensure each student has school supplies on an annual basis

2. Deliver our series of quality Teacher Development workshops to our teachers and to other teachers in an appropriate and timely manner.

3. Work to encourage the growth of the secondary school at Heart Valley

4. Develop a library of current print and technology resources at Heart Valley School

Developments to Date:

• Stan and Bruce have been involved with Heart to Heart since January of 2008. Since that time they have been involved in a number of activities including: fundraising, gathering, shipping, and distributing thousands of pounds of school supplies, and delivering Module One of our Teacher Development Workshop to all of the Heart Valley administration and teaching staff. We have also worked with the H2H Education Committee and developed a strategy for growing our secondary school.

• They have a number of important connections including;

  • Ernie Janzen, Principal of MEI Elementary who also sits on the H2H Education Committee

  • Harry Schmidt of Harwood Industries and the Schmidt Family Foundation

  • Dave Holmberg of Bobcat Country Sales

  • Ed Fast our local MP

  • Due to the earthquake they have been involved in relief efforts since they returned from their interrupted trip in January of this year.

Our most important connection is with the children and teachers at the Heart Valley School. They are committed to the Heart to Heart development model because it helps to build capacity in the people of Haiti. Despite all obstacles, poverty, natural disasters, widespread health problems and a chaos inducing lack of effective infrastructure, H2H preaches and practices, the importance of assisting the Haitian people to develop to a point where they solve their problems.

Future Plans for Education in 2010;

1. We are poised to ship approximately 3100 lbs of school supplies for distribution to our students for the upcoming school year.

2. We are set to deliver Module Two of our Teacher Development Workshops to our teachers in the first week of July.

3. During our July 2010 visit we will organize school supplies, deliver the Module Two workshop, evaluate the current building situation vis-à-vis starting the secondary school with one grade this Sept., and meet with our school administration team and plan for the future.

We want to take this opportunity to thank every one of the schools and districts that got behind us and partnered with us for the “Rice Drive” immediately following the earthquake. It was wonderful and encouraging for us to see the entire SD 34 get involved and many other districts with helping Heart Valley school and community get the food they so desperately needed!
