PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Nothing will help prepare you better than talking to someone who has already experienced what you will experience. If you know someone who has already been to Heart to Heart Valley, grill them with questions! They will likely be ecstatic to show you their pictures & talk about their adventure. If you don’t know anyone who has gone before ask your team leader or email Rebecca Larkin at rebeccalarkin6@hotmail.com. They will be able to connect you with someone in your area or share their experience with you. SERVING OTHERS: If you are new to missions, or need a refresher on what it means to serve others in a mission environment, this is a great book; Cross-Cultural Servanthood, Serving the World in Christlike Humility by Duane Elmer. HISTORY OF HAITI: Learning about the history of Haiti will help you understand why the country is in the state it is. Search the web for information or check out one of these sources: LANGUAGE: Haitian Kreyol (aka Creole) is spoken in Haiti. It has French roots but is much simpler & you can definitely learn some of the basics before arriving in Haiti. This is a great book; Creole Made Easy, A simple introduction to Haitian Creole for English speaking people by Wally R. Turnbull. It is difficult to find in bookstores by it can be purchased online at Amazon.com. HEALTH: You should visit a Travel Clinic before coming to Haiti. The one we reccomend is the Fraser Valley Travel Clinic There are some shots you should get (ie: Polio, TD, Typhoid, Hepatitis, Tetanus) & some prescription medicine you should bring with you. (ie; malaria, travelers diarrhea). Your trip to Haiti will be a life changing adventure so sit back, relax & enjoy the ride!
