Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to sponsor a child?
It costs $35 per month to sponsor a child.  We take payment in the form of cheques (lump sum for one year) or 12 post-dated cheques.  For your convenience we also have automated debit where your sponsorship donations can be withdrawn monthly from your account.

How is my $35 a month spent?
All funds go to the daily care of our 350 students and orphans. This includes food, education, basic medical needs, school text books and supplies, a school uniform and housing expenses. We also utilize over 15 paid Haitian staff as teachers, cooks, laundry ladies and a handy-man for the operation of the Children's Home and school.  Any foreign staff raises their own support.

What percentage of my money goes to Haiti?
Heart to Heart is a non-profit organization run strictly by volunteers.  We have no overhead and pay no administrative salaries.  The only funds that do not go directly towards the daily care of our children in Haiti would be to pay for advertising, mail-outs and a small amount of administrative costs.  Each H2H board member is responsible for covering their own travel costs to and from Haiti. On average, 96% of your money goes directly to Haiti.

How long does sponsorship last?
You may discontinue your sponsorship at any time, but we would love it if you could commit for at least one year.

What happens after my sponsor child finishes grade 6?
Students who want to carry on with their education and are sponsored, can attend one of the high schools in the town of Grande Goave.  There are 7 grades of high school, and once they are in high school grades 5-7 they can rewrite courses they have failed, and often start working part time. Even if they don't finish gr. 6 or 7 of high school they can take a college course. We rely on donations to send the kids to college.

Can I visit my sponsored child?
Yes!  At least two mission teams go down every year.  Please contact John Neufeld, the H2H Chairperson for information on the next team travelling down and how you can be part of a team.  You can email John at
johnneufeld-h2h@shaw.ca

Will you keep me updated on my sponsored child?
Yes. We will send you two newsletters every year – one in June and one in December.  You will also receive a letter or card from your child or classroom twice a year.  Urgent information is sent out by email as required.

What language does my sponsored child speak and read?
All of our children speak Creole, which is a mix of French and African dialect. This is their primary language. While attending school, they learn to read and write French and some basic English.

Can I send packages and cards to my sponsored child?
Yes! We feel it is important for the children to feel special and loved. Please address all mail or packages to H2H – Fraser Valley Branch; 3325 Firhill Dr., Abbotsford, B.C. V2T 5L4.  If you wish to send a package, please make sure it fits into a large Ziploc bag and is clearly labeled with the name of the child and your name.  We will ensure the package is sent with the next team or individual travelling to Haiti.

Can I send extra money so that a gift can be purchased for my sponsored child?
It is possible but complicated to designate funds for such specific use.   If extra funds are sent, we will use them for special gifts for your sponsored child, but we prefer you put a package together yourself.

If I want to send a gift, what should I send?
You may send anything you feel is appropriate for the age of the child. Typical gifts include clothing, shoes, skipping ropes, deflated soccer balls and pump, jacks, toys, candy, Frisbees, Barbies, trucks, hair accessories, writing pads/pens, and toiletries.

Do I get a tax receipt?
Yes!  Heart to Heart is a non-profit charitable organization.  All donations are tax-receiptable.  You can expect a tax receipt to come in the mail by the end of February every year.
